WaterSecurance
WaterSecurance proposes the development of an integrated cybersecurity compliance and assurance toolkit for connected Industrial IoT (IIoT) devices deployed in drinking water supply and distribution networks. The project addresses a pressing and concrete challenge: European water utilities are currently undertaking large-scale deployments of ultrasonic IoT water meters (such as the Kamstrup flowIQ series) connecting tens of thousands of smart devices to their distribution infrastructure. These IIoT devices communicate via NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, and proprietary radio protocols, creating a vast new attack surface within critical infrastructure classified as essential under the NIS2 Directive. The supply chain for these devices includes multiple manufacturers, including from outside the EU, raising additional concerns around firmware integrity, backdoor vulnerabilities, and supply chain trust.
